Superstores destroying our 'useful' shops

I don't know how Peter Barnard (The Cumberland News, June 6) has arrived at his conclusions that the Sainsbury convenience store will not affect the traffic levels in Stanwix.

It is bound to increase the car usage around here. Besides, this proposed development is opposite an existing convenience store which obviously caters sufficiently for local demand.

Any more will lead to the ‘law of diminishing returns’ for the existing businesses.

During the last 10 years so many useful shops have disappeared from Stanwix due to the relentless price cutting by superstores in the area.

We had an ironmongers, shoe repairers, vegetable shop and building society, now all gone.

This destruction by the national chains must stop.

There may be a suitable location for Sainsburys south of the Eden but definitely not in Stanwix.

I say ‘stop’ to Sainsburys.
