It is almost 10 years since Brian and Pat Porter first began writing their monthly cycling columns for The Cumberland News. But Brian and Pat, from Kells Place in Carlisle, have been cycling for much longer than that.To satisfy his travelling bug, Brian has made many cycling trips abroad on his own, often to France but also to northern Norway, within the Arctic Circle.

THE new owners of Corkscrew Wines in Carlisle have their work cut out. Dave Ogden, 44, and Liz Hardwick, 33, recently took over the shop in Viaduct Estate from Laurie and Jenny Scott who retired after 18 years.

Atrip to Holland 19 years ago changed the lives of Geoff and Christine Cox. It is the idea they had there that is bringing 200 ceramic artists from all over the world to Cumbria this summer for Britain’s oldest and largest pottery festivals.The first Potfest event took place in 1994 with 100 ceramicists participating, mostly from northern England and southern Scotland.Potfest in the Pens at Skirsgill auction mart will take place two weeks later, from August 8-10, and will feature around 120 potters, ranging from beginners to the more experienced.
