European Day of Languages
Last updated 11:32, Tuesday, 23 September 2008
THE European Day of Languages (EDL), a Council of Europe initiative, is held annually on September 26 to celebrate language and cultural diversity.
The day was first celebrated in 2001, which was the European Year of Languages and is now a fixture in 45 countries throughout Europe.
The aims include alerting the public to the importance of language learning, to increase awareness and appreciation of all languages, and to encourage lifelong language learning.
