Instructors face court over Wetheral teen's pool death

Two men will appear in court later this month accused of Health and Safety breaches in connection with the death of a Carlisle teenager.
Laura McDairmant, 15, of Wetheral, died after an accident while on an adventure holiday in southern Scotland in July 2006.
Gareth Alcorn, 25, and Richard Farrell, 28, are accused of failing to take proper notice of hazards – particularly protruding rocks – at a pool in the Galloway Forest Park on July 25.
They were working as outdoor activity instructors with a group of which Laura was a part at the Grey Mare’s Tail Burn.
The Abernethy Trust is accused of failing to ensure persons not in their employment were not exposed to risks.
Laura, a pupil at the William Howard School in Brampton, died at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary.
All charges are said to be contrary to the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act.
Alcorn, of Coleraine, Northern Ireland, and Farrell, of the Abernethy Trust, have not yet entered pleas to the charges against them.
The case was dealt with administratively at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court yesterday and was adjourned until Thursday October 23
