AN ALBANIAN man who was deported from the UK but then smuggled back into the country was caught during a routine police traffic stop in Carlisle.

Dilaver Golemi, 31, was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by the police in Carlisle on May 1, the city’s Rickergate court heard.

He has now pleaded guilty to breaching a deportation order made in March 2020.

He and another man immediately ran away when the car stopped but both were caught and detained, said prosecutor Peter Kelly.

When he was questioned, Golemi admitted that he knew about the deportation order imposed on him in February 2020.

He had also been dealt with previously for illegally producing cannabis in 2022, for which he was given a 22-month prison sentence. He explained that he had also earlier returned to the UK from his native Albania in November 2021.

Golemi was arrested in the French UK control zone before entering the country fully.

His most recent return to the UK was two weeks ago, when he was concealed in an HGV, having paid people smugglers £14,000 for the journey, which took him through Italy, France and Spain.

He was now in debt to the people smugglers, he said.

District Judge John Temperley noted that the defendant had pleaded guilty to the offence but said his powers of sentence were not sufficient.

He sent the defendant to Carlisle Crown Court for sentence on May 31, remanding Golemi in custody until that hearing.
