Vital support for illness sufferers
Last updated 09:20, Friday, 10 October 2008
SUFFERERS of a widely misunderstood illness are being given the chance to find out more and get vital support.
The Cumbrian branch of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) is holding an open meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at Carlisle Rugby Club, from 4pm to 6pm. People living with rheumatoid arthritis, family, carers and health professionals are all encouraged to attend.
Special guest speakers will include occupational therapist Fiona Caven and Alice Peterson, a sufferer who had to give up her dream of becoming a professional tennis player when she was diagnosed at 18. She now gives motivational talks on how she has battled the illness.
There will also be time to chat with other sufferers and pass on tips and advice.
The event has been organised by the Cumbria Volunteer Support Group, which is funded through donations.
Most of its members are themselves sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis. The condition, which affects around one in 10 people, is extremely debilitating and causes severe pain. It is very different from osteoarthritis, which is largely linked with old age.
Rheumatoid arthritis can affect anybody of any age. It results in your immune system attacking your joints and can affect internal organs.
To find out more visit the open meeting next week. Refreshments are provided. Contact Clare or Paul on 0845 4583969 or email volunteers@rheumatoid.org.uk.
