Strange new folk about – but nothing to be scared of

SOME striking new residents have set up home in north Cumbria.

Hello: Laura Whitehead and son Dominic meet the new neighbour

But don’t be offended if you greet them with a “good morning” and they don’t return the favour.

For they are no ordinary newcomers, but some scarecrows which have been specially created for the villages of Crosby-on-Eden, Linstock, High Crosby, Walby and Wallhead for a new community event.

Enthusiastic residents have made about 60 scarecrows which can be seen relaxing in gardens and playing the guitar, and range from traditional figures to Bob the Builder – and even a new vicar.

Members of St John’s Church, Crosby-on-Eden, have pulled the event together.

Organiser Diane Hampson said: “This is something we have never done before.

“When we first put the notices out there was very little response, but in the past two or three weeks all these scarecrows have started to be made. The response has been fantastic and they are still going up.

“There are some fantastic scarecrows.

“It has really brought the community together. People are getting to know each other.”

People will be able to see the creations for themselves by taking part in a scarecrow trail, including a treasure hunt, between 11am and 5pm tomorrow. Various competitions will also take place in the church hall, where teas will be served.

Judging to find the best scarecrow is continuing with prizes presented for first, second and third places in different sections. The treasure hunt winner will also receive a prize.

Admission to the hall and a map which takes you around Crosby-on-Eden, Wallhead, Linstock and back to the hall costs £2.50 and is available on the day.

All proceeds are in aid of church funds.
