MP tackles rural life in his new role

CUMBRIAN MP Tim Farron has been appointed the Liberal Democrat’s shadow secretary of state for Defra.

The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale said he would be tackling the Government’s policies on rural life.

Meanwhile, Defra Secretary Hilary Benn has announced the establishment of a new team of advisers on food and farming policy.

Food and Farming Minister Jeff Rooker has retired and is replaced by Liverpool MP Jane Kennedy as Minister for Farming and the Environment and Phil Hunt, Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, who will be Minister for Sustainable Development, Climate Change Adaptation and Air Quality.

Lord Rooker was a popular figure in the farm industry.
