Hope for bread depot workers under threat

THREATENED workers at a Carlisle bread depot could win a reprieve, it has emerged.
Bakery giant Warburtons announced two weeks ago that it intended to close its Rosehill distribution centre in September with the loss of 26 jobs. Bosses said the firm had “outgrown” the site.
The company began a 30-day consultation period with staff and unions and has started redundancy negotiations. But it now appears bosses are seeking alternative premises in the city and could yet stay.
Carlisle MP Eric Martlew is due to meet with Warburtons today to discuss the issue.
Carlisle City Council leader Mike Mitchelson said: “Thus far, Carlisle City Council has had no discussions with Warburtons regarding assistance with locating potential sites they might wish to relocate their depot to within the city.
“However, we are seeking a meeting with them to discuss potential sites and to explore any opportunities to maintain their presence in the city as these jobs are important to Carlisle.'”
Warburtons’ 10-year lease on the Rosehill site – at Allenbrook Road – ran out in September 2006, but was extended for two years.
But bosses say the operation has since “outgrown” the building.
Bread will now be driven from Newcastle to supply shops in Carlisle.
Staff at Rosehill – mainly delivery drivers and administrative workers – will be offered positions at other Warburtons sites. The nearest are in Newcastle, Glasgow, and Blackpool.
