A poetic incentive to drink wine

Millionaire entrepreneur Felix Dennis brings some of his poems and a taste of his massive wine collection to Cumbria this month.

His recitals, which include a free glass of fine wine have become hugely popular and this is the third time he has visited the county.

This year’s event, to launch his latest collection Homeless in my Heart is billed as the UK’s largest-ever poetry tour.

The tours, entitled Did I Mention the Free Wine? have become an international phenomenon since the first outing in 2002.

Since then, over 20,000 free glasses of fine French wine have been handed out at recitals, to over 10,000 fans, as part of this ever-expanding tour that has so far visited 50 international cities, and covered over 80,000 miles.

Dennis, who was co-editor of the notorious OZ magazine in the 1960s and was put on trial for corrupting public morals (and acquitted at the old Bailey) reads for The Wordsworth Trust at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere, on Tuesday, October 21.

Did I Mention the Free Wine? is free of charge but those attending are asked to make a voluntary donation to The Forest of Dennis, a charitable organisation established to create the UK’s largest native broadleaf forest open to the public.

The hope is that a further 2,000 trees will be planted as a result of the 2008 tour.
