Tune in to the lost city below Thirlmere

Not all the work at this year’s Fred Festival is visual. London-based artist Melissa Bliss is creating a work to be heard by radio.

Melissa is creating a work entitled Under the Waters which aims to use sounds to conjure up the image of a lost city.

The sound will be broadcast at the shores of Thirlmere at 88MHz on FM radio. Bring a radio, or a mobile phone with built-in radio, to the shores of the lake to hear the work while looking out over the water.

Melissa, 42, has been working as an artist for the past 20 years. She studied art at Middlesex University and works mostly in the capital but has visited Cumbria many times and developed a great affection for it.

As an artist she is interested in people’s relationships with places, and explained: “I want to encourage people to look out over the water of Thirlmere, listen to the sounds of the imaginary city on their headphones and let their minds drift. I hope it will be a calm and contemplative experience for people.”

The sound can be received at 88MHz at two places on the shores of the lake, at the car parks at Armboth and Dob Gill. Map references are available from www.fredsblog.co.uk
