Talented young Cumbrians are clearing their throats and brushing up their scales for the start of this year’s Carlisle and District Music and Drama Festival.
Where it all began: The Century Theatre, forerunner of the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, on a visit to the town with its original mobile theatre in 1966
Now in its 108th year, the festival is one of the oldest music events in the country, with a great tradition of bringing on young instrumentalists and singers.
Kathleen Ferrier began her illustrious singing career when she won the contralto section, which she entered as a bet.
And Carlisle’s Ida-Maria Turri competed here before making her name as a world-renowned mezzo soprano.
